Cindy Fallsen Dogs Helping the Sick

I have been thinking about the way that pets are used to help those having surgery. When my son had a procedure last year, they used a dog to help calm him down so they could start the IV. I think it is great how animals are used in this way. To see a child who is scared to death because he is having Heart surgery crack a smile is worth its weight in gold. Use more animals in this way! Cindy Fallsen Taking a Pet to Europe

We are considering taking our cockapoo to Europe. She has a number of health problems and we were wondering what sort of medical care would be available there. We also received a Travel insurance quote in case something happened in transit. Do you know what a fair price might be for a two week trip? Continue

Angie Riley-Grimes Thank You to Metro Animal Services Staff

There has been a lot of media coverage about the recent flooding at MAS. Some of it very positive and some negative. Having spent the last two days at the makeshift shelt at the fairgrounds and performing cleanup at the shelter itself, I just wanted to pause a moment and comment on the negative. First, MAS in general sometimes gets a bad wrap because they do have to euthanize animals on occasion. This is never because that is the staff's choice. Everyone at Metro is there because they care. I ca… Continue

ArtByAlida Have you lost a dog in Hanover or Madison, Indiana?

This dog has been hanging around the McDonalds in Hanover, Indiana. The dog warden has tried to catch it, but with no luck. The McDonalds is on 56/62 and Thompson Road. If you know this dog, please call me at 260-220-2900 or call the Jefferson County Animal Shelter. Perhaps they have succeeded in catching it. I couldn't get near the dog, or I would have taken it home and tried to find it's family.

ArtByAlida Treating Hot Spots and Skin Conditions Organically

Some breeds of dogs get hot spots. There are just some dogs which are more genetically prone to skin conditions. Most often a hotspot appears when the dog starts biting and scratching a particular place and it becomes red and the come off in the affected area. come The dog is plainly miserable because of it. They will continually lick it and white dogs, in particular, may show a redness wherever the licking occurs. White poodles, and bichon frises and many other breeds seem to get it the most.… Continue

Dr. Laura Strong Itch equals pain

When a dog starts scratching and can’t seem to stop, everyone in the house suffers. Chronic itching is all too often either trivialized or misdiagnosed. And that’s too bad because there are solutions out there. First and foremost, owners of itchy pets need to understand that not all dogs that scratch suffer from “mange.” This catchall phrase ignores the fact that there are in fact multiple causes for a dog to scratch, some of which occur simultaneously. Once a veterinarian has ruled out parasi… Continue

Joe Roberts 1 to 4 cats in need of care during sabbatical leave

Dear Fellow Pet Lovers, We are a faculty family and have a leave of absence this coming school year. We will be living overseas during this time and cannot take our four wonderful cats. We are seeking someone who would be willing to care for them in their own home(s). Although ideally they could stay together, we are open to splitting them and sending them to separate homes. Although not a tremendous amount, compensation will be offered in addition to food and supplies. They are healthy and caug… Continue

Feeders Supply Shedding Season

We love our furry friends, but this time of year the “furry” part can be a problem. Remember that the natural shed cycle is nature’s way to prepare your pet for the hot summer months. To stay comfortable and a socially acceptable part of the family, your furry pet needs your assistance in getting through this hairy experience. Seasonal shedding is a normal process and routine brushing is important to making shedding bearable for both your pet and you. In addition to removing fur, there are oth… Continue
